Learn phonograms with the Family Word Wheel
Family words help children learn phonics
Learning phonograms will assist children to understand how sounds can be blended together, segmented and manipulated to
form words. Blending sounds together or 'phonics' is a reading strategy to 'sound out' unfamiliar words when
reading or to spell words when writing.
Word families are the ideal way to
teach phonics. Learning phonics early provides the basis for understanding the alphabetic sound
principles and lays the foundation successful reading acquisition.
Use a Family Word Wheel to help your child to:
• Understand how sounds in words relate to their
corresponding written symbols
Understand the relationship between spoken sounds and written letter clusters
• Identify individual sounds within words
• Decode text quickly
• Read text accurately
• Understand and interpret what they are reading
• Spell and write accurately and fluently
Knowing the most commonly
used phonograms will enable your child to decode words and link the sounds within spoken language to
printed letters and words. By having an understanding of ‘word families’ your child will begin to identify words in
print by ‘sounding out’ the letter clusters and blending them together to say the word.
How to make a Family Word Wheel
What you will need:-
• Brass fastener or large press stud
Cut out two circles, one larger than the other.
Write 'common' endings of words around the edge of the larger circle.
For example: ay, ow, all, ight.
Write 'beginning' letters or letter combinations around
the edge of the smaller circle.
For example: b, bl, br, c, cl,
Make a hole
in the centre of both circles.
Fasten the circles (with the smaller one at the front) using the
brass fastener or press stud.
How to use a Family Word Wheel
Ensure you have fun when
using your word wheel. Rotate the circles and see what words you can make. Decide if you have
created a real or a nonsense word. Find all the real words and write these into a ‘fun word book’, chart
or word folder.
Utilise your ‘Family word wheel’
to create rhymes and construct your own book of rhymes. Then have your child practice reading their
rhymes and then perform them to an appreciative audience.
The more fun you have with the wheel the better. It is important
that your child enjoys the experience. The more time spent using the wheel the more the child will learn about word
families and this will make learning to read and spell easier.
Play with the nonsense words and make silly rhymes with them.
Phonics instruction is best taught through play. Making rhymes, poems and other
word play activities and playing with sounds and rhymes teaches children to listen to the patterns in language and
will make the task of learning to read easier.
