Jen Chatterton author of Teach Children to ReadHi,

I’m a mum, a grandmother, an early childhood professional and a special education teacher. I am very passionate about teaching children to read. I have worked in pre schools and in special education facilities teaching young children and children with special needs to successfully develop literacy skills.

Over the years I tried many different strategies to teach reading skills to children and gradually developed a successful learning to read program that worked.

Young children learn best with guidance from a caring adult and when learning is fun. My teaching program introduces learning to read strategies using specially designed games and play activities.

Follow my program and your child will develop reading skills and learning will be enjoyable for both you and your child.

After reading this book you will know how to:

TickTeach your child the most important skill for academic success
Children who cannot read effectively experience significant difficulties understanding various types of educational content and are at risk of failure in school.

TickTeach reading at home
You are in the best position to guide your child’s learning. When you provide an environment that is fun, stimulating, loving and safe it gives children the best possible chance to learn easily.

TickProvide the best opportunity for reading success
A caring and loving environment is the platform for children to develop confidence and a positive self-image. Children that feel good about themselves are able to succeed.

TickIntroduce pre-reading skills to your child from an early age
A three year old' s brain is twice as active as adults. Children are like ‘super sponges’, their brains are hard wired to learn.

TickIntroduce learning to read activities in games
Children learn while playing. Playing with your child is beneficial for both you and your child. The American Academy of Pediatrics' policy statement (2011) states that;
‘The importance of parents sitting down to play with their children cannot be overstated.’

TickIntroduce learning to read in a fun and interactive way
Young children learn best with directly interacting with a caring adult rather than a computer. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ policy statement (2011) states that;
‘young children learn best from and need interaction with humans not screens.’

TickGet your child off on the right foot for success
Children who get off to a poor start in reading rarely catch up; the struggling first-grade reader almost invariably continues to be a poor reader.

TickIntroduce daily reading with your child
Reading aloud to your child is the single most critical factor to their reading success later in life. Children growing up in homes where they are read to regularly, get 3 more years schooling than children from homes where children are not read to.

TickTeach sight words or commonly used words
The easiest and most enjoyable way to teach sight words is through playing word games with your child.

TickTeach phonics or letter sounds and clusters
Approximately 20% of children have significant reading difficulties. Phonics instruction significantly improves children’s reading comprehension and is most effective when introduced early.

TickRole model reading
Just telling your child reading is important will not in itself get them enthusiastic, seeing you reading is an important motivator for your child.

How to teach children to read

Not only will you receive my 'Teach children to read, a fun and easy ten step program for parents' ebook, but you will also receive the following items FREE of charge:

Book of RhymesA bonus book of 38 original ‘family word’ rhymes (valued at $7.90)
The rhymes are specifically designed to introduce the most commonly used ‘word families’ or phonograms. ‘Word families’ are a more reliable way to introduce letter sounds or ‘phonics’ as individual sounds can differ for the same letter. Teaching these ‘word families’ will build your child’s reading skills by helping them to decode commonly used sounds when reading.

Phonogram wheel

A bonus family word wheel (valued at $4.90)
The ‘family word wheel’ teaches phonograms and reinforces the ‘word families’ introduced in the rhymes. The wheel has concentric circles that when rotated form words. It includes 38 ‘word families’ endings and 52 ‘onset’ sounds or beginning word sounds. From this wheel approximately 560 words can be constructed.

Sight words cardsA bonus set of commonly used words (valued at $3.50)
Learning a set of high frequency words by sight, helps children build fluency when reading, and therefore the task of reading becomes quicker, less demanding and more enjoyable.

Book of sight word phrasesA bonus book of 'Over 300 Sight Word Phrases' (valued at $3.90)
These sentences contain only words from the 100 most commonly used words. They are a base to develop books for your child to commence reading. Books for beginner readers should contain approximately 95% of familiar words. These sentences are constructed using the sight words, or commonly used words introduced earlier. Use these sentences to construct your child’s first reading books. Children become successful readers and gain meaning from books that have familiar words and topics of interest.

Word blending cardsA bonus set of printable word blending cards (valued at $3.50)
These pre-prepare printable word cards teach blending, the ability to combine individual sounds into one word. Blending is a significant skill that does not come automatically or easily to a lot of children.

Alphabet flash cardsA bonus set of printable letters and alphabet picture cards (valued at $3.90)
The printable alphabet cards reinforce the letter sounds; they have upper case, lower case and written alphabet letters at the top, a picture in the middle and a word at the bottom.

(+ FREE) A bonus list of songs
Songs are particularly good for developing language skills as they repeat sentence patterns and introduce tone, beat and rhythm. Songs also; help the child anticipate what is coming next, extend concentration span and teaches rhyming skills.

(+ FREE)
 A bonus list of books
When children are learning to read, there is a difference between the stories that are read to children and the stories that children read. It is important to find books with familiar words and story plots. To develop fluency, children need books that are not only interesting but are also comprehensible.
